Looking for a job that helps you earn the certification you need to start your career?
Registered Behavior Technician, or RBT, is one career path worth considering. Some ABA employers provide or pay for the required training employees need as they work toward RBT certification. In fact, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, or BACB, specifically recognizes that the required 40-hour RBT training may be provided by an employer, university, or online training program.
At Applied ABC, we help make that first step more accessible. Our careers page currently offers the 40-hour RBT training course at no cost to help people working toward their RBT credential.
That means a career in applied behavior analysis may allow you to enter a growing professional field without first spending years earning a specialized college degree.
But there is an important distinction: RBT training and RBT certification are not the same thing.
Here is what prospective RBTs should know.
What Is a Registered Behavior Technician?
A Registered Behavior Technician is a paraprofessional certified in behavior analysis through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board.
RBTs help deliver behavior-analytic services while working under the direction and close supervision of qualified supervisors.
In an ABA setting, an RBT may work directly with children and families to help implement treatment plans developed by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, or BCBA.
Depending on the position and organization, RBTs may work in settings such as:
- ABA therapy centers
- Clients’ homes
- Schools
- Community settings
For someone interested in psychology, education, child development, healthcare, special education, social services, or working directly with children, becoming an RBT can provide an entry point into the ABA field.
Can a Job Pay for Your RBT Training?
Yes. An employer can provide RBT training.
The BACB’s current 2026 requirements state that the mandatory 40-hour RBT training may be offered by an employer, university, or online training program.
That creates an interesting opportunity for job seekers.
Instead of paying for training before applying for a position, you may be able to find an ABA employer that helps you complete some of the required training as part of your career path.
However, employers structure these programs differently.
One company may provide the 40-hour course at no cost. Another may also cover certification-related fees, assessments, exam preparation, or other expenses.
That is why job seekers should look beyond phrases such as “paid certification” and ask exactly what the employer covers.

What Are the RBT Certification Requirements in 2026?
The RBT certification process includes more than simply completing a course.
Under the BACB’s 2026 requirements, applicants must meet several eligibility and certification requirements.
1. Be at Least 18 Years Old
You must be at least 18 when you submit your RBT certification application.
2. Have a High School Education or Equivalent
A bachelor’s degree is not required.
The BACB requires at least a high school-level education or equivalent.
This is one reason the RBT path can be appealing to people searching for entry-level healthcare or behavioral health careers without a four-year degree.
3. Complete Required Background and Abuse Registry Checks
Applicants must meet the BACB’s current criminal background and abuse registry check requirements.
Individual employers, states, funders, or service settings may have additional requirements.
4. Complete the Required 40-Hour RBT Training
Every new RBT applicant must complete training that meets the current RBT 2026 40-Hour Training Requirements and Curriculum Outline.
Under the current rules, the training must take place over no fewer than five days and no more than 180 days.
The training covers the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for work as a behavior technician.
5. Complete the RBT Initial Competency Assessment
Finishing the 40-hour course does not make someone an RBT.
After completing the training, candidates must successfully complete the RBT Initial Competency Assessment with a qualified assessor. Under the 2026 requirements, that assessment must be completed after the 40-hour training and within the required timeframe before applying.
6. Apply for RBT Certification
Once the eligibility requirements are met, candidates submit an application through the BACB.
As of 2026, the BACB certification application processing fee is $65.
7. Pass the RBT Examination
After the application is approved, candidates can schedule the RBT exam through Pearson VUE.
The current examination includes 85 multiple-choice questions, 75 of which are scored, and candidates receive 90 minutes to complete the exam.
As of 2026, Pearson VUE charges $45 per RBT examination appointment, separate from the BACB application fee.
Once all requirements are successfully completed, the candidate can earn the Registered Behavior Technician certification.
Is the Free 40-Hour Course the Same as Free RBT Certification?
No.
This is an important distinction that job seekers should understand.
The 40-hour RBT course is one requirement in the certification process. Completing the course does not automatically make someone a Registered Behavior Technician.
The complete process also includes eligibility requirements, background and registry checks, the Initial Competency Assessment, the BACB application, and passing the RBT examination.
So when an employer says it provides “RBT training,” ask what is included.
A good question is:
“Which parts of the RBT certification process does the company provide or pay for?”
That could include:
- The 40-hour RBT course
- Initial Competency Assessment support
- BACB application fees
- RBT examination fees
- Exam preparation
- BCBA supervision
- Additional clinical training
The answer will depend on the employer and position.
At Applied ABC, the benefit we specifically advertise is the 40-hour RBT course at no cost.
Can You Become an RBT With No Experience?
Previous ABA work experience is not one of the BACB’s basic eligibility requirements for RBT certification.
The current requirements focus on age, education, required checks, the 40-hour training, competency assessment, application, and examination.
Individual employers can still establish their own hiring requirements, so not every RBT or Behavior Technician position will be entry-level.
But if you are interested in ABA and have never worked in the field before, a lack of previous RBT experience does not automatically prevent you from pursuing certification.
This makes the field particularly relevant for:
- Recent high school graduates
- College students
- Psychology students and graduates
- Education professionals
- Paraprofessionals
- Childcare professionals
- People exploring behavioral healthcare careers
- Career changers interested in working directly with children
Do You Need a College Degree to Become an RBT?
No.
The BACB requires applicants to have at least a high school-level education or equivalent. A bachelor’s degree is not required for RBT certification.
That makes becoming an RBT different from many careers in psychology, counseling, therapy, and behavioral healthcare that require several years of higher education before someone can begin practicing.
For some people, becoming an RBT is also the first step toward a longer career in behavior analysis.
An RBT may eventually decide to pursue additional education and work toward credentials such as the BCBA.
But you do not need to have your entire career mapped out before getting started.
Can You Get Hired Before You Become an RBT?
Sometimes.
The BACB itself notes that applying for RBT certification will often occur after someone has been employed by an organization where they will continue working with qualified behavior analysts.
However, whether someone can work as a Behavior Technician before earning RBT certification depends on factors such as the employer, state requirements, funding source, service setting, and specific position.
This is why searching only for “RBT jobs” can sometimes cause new candidates to miss opportunities.
Also consider searching for:
- Behavior Technician jobs
- ABA Behavior Technician jobs
- Entry-level ABA jobs
- Behavior Therapist jobs
- RBT jobs with paid training
- RBT training provided
- No experience ABA jobs
- Employer-paid RBT training
A Behavior Technician opening may provide a pathway toward RBT certification even when the applicant is not yet certified.
How Long Does It Take to Become an RBT?
There is no single timeline that applies to every candidate.
The required 40-hour training itself must be completed over at least five days and no more than 180 days under current BACB requirements.
After training, candidates still need to complete the Initial Competency Assessment, submit their application, receive approval, schedule the exam, and pass it.
The BACB currently advises allowing approximately two weeks for application processing, although actual timelines can vary.
For that reason, think of RBT certification as a multi-step process rather than a single class.
What Should You Look for in an RBT Employer?
Getting help with training is valuable, but it should not be the only thing you consider when choosing where to begin your ABA career.
Look for an organization that invests in what happens after you complete the course, too.
Consider asking prospective employers about:
1. Training
Does the company provide the required 40-hour training? Is there additional hands-on training?
2. Certification Support
Will someone help you understand the competency assessment, application, and exam process?
3. Clinical Supervision
Who will supervise you once you begin providing services?
4. Ongoing Support
Is there someone you can contact when you have clinical questions or need additional guidance?
5. Professional Development
Does the organization provide workshops, continuing education, mentorship, or opportunities to build new skills?
6. Career Growth
If you eventually want to become a BCBA or move into another role, is there a clear path for professional growth?
A free course can help you get started.
A strong clinical environment can help you build a career.
