Some argue that charter schools serve students with disabilities well, while others raise concerns about access, inclusion, and whether students with higher needs are fully supported.<\/p>\n<p>New research from Michigan adds an important layer of evidence that district leaders should pay attention to\u2014not because it provides a simple answer, but because it highlights what may actually drive better outcomes for students with disabilities.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"aabc-callout\">Why this matters<\/h2>\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/reachcentered.org\/publications\/the-effect-of-charter-schools-on-identification-service-provision-and-achievement-of-students-with-disabilities?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><strong>study <\/strong><\/a>published by the National Center for Research on Educational Access and Choice examined approximately 60,000 Michigan K\u20138 students who transferred from traditional public schools to charter schools between 2013 and 2018. The question is: what systems are in place that help students with disabilities succeed within the least restrictive environment possible?<\/p>\n<p>Strong outcomes often come down to operational and instructional consistency: staff who respond the same way across classrooms, clear behavior support plans that are easy to implement, BCBA led consultation and coaching, caregiver engagement, and data systems that allow teams to monitor progress and adjust interventions early.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"aabc-list\">\n<li><strong>Consistency across staff<\/strong> so expectations don\u2019t change from room to room.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Practical behavior plans<\/strong> that are implementable during real classroom routines.<\/li>\n<li><strong>BCBA-led coaching<\/strong> that supports follow-through, not just paperwork.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Family partnership<\/strong> that strengthens home\u2013school alignment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Simple data routines<\/strong> that trigger early adjustments before needs intensify.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 14px;\">When those structures are in place, schools reduce disruption, increase instructional time, improve attendance, and build more sustainable support models for students with disabilities. The Michigan findings reinforce that student success is often shaped less by the label of the setting and more by the strength of the system surrounding the learner.<br \/>\nDistricts that invest in consistent school-based behavioral infrastructure are better positioned to support students effectively, reduce unnecessary intensification of services, and improve outcomes across placements.<\/p>\n<p>As Michigan\u2019s data suggests, the opportunity is not about doing less.
